Of all the things I've written in my career as a NASCAR reporter the following may be the most surprising sentence of all - Fontana was the best race of the 2013 Sprint Cup Series season. The often-maligned two-mile Southern California track produced one of the most entertaining races in recent NASCAR history back in March. The 400-mile affair had everything a fan could want - exciting racing, four and five wide action, pit strategy drama, high emotions and tempers flaring after the race. Unfortunately, Denny Hamlin was injured in a hard crash late in the race after making contact with Joey Logano but that was the only downer of a day that no other race of the other 35 could match the rest of the season.

The Pocono August race. Jimmie Johnson dominated the June race there and expectations were that he would do the same in this event. The 400-mile race featured 27 lead changes and a duel between teammates Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne in the final laps. Gordon was winless at that point and watching his Chase hopes fade. Kahne had one win and knew a second victory would clinch a Chase spot. A late-caution set up a challenging restart for Kahne, who led. He had Gordon on the inside. In the row behind were Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch, who also were fighting for a Chase spot. When the green waved a final time, Kahne bolted and went on to win. This race stands out the for the drama in the final laps and how - had it not been for the Richmond shenanigans - this might have cost Gordon a shot at the Chase.

The Aaron's 499 in May at Talladega Superspeedway ... David Ragan? Yes, David Ragan! What a refreshing change of pace from the high-dollar, "mega-teams" winning every week. Front Row Motorsports turned the sport upside down and inside out for at least a week and this is why the Cup races at Talladega are my favorite dates on the calendar year in and year out ... maximum excitement and minimum predictability.

There was a lot of hype leading up to the first NASCAR national series race on dirt in over 40 years and it lived up to it and more. With a standing-room only crowd, Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway was the site of the CarCash Mudsummer Classic that also featured heat races to help determine the starting line-up for feature event. The heat races and main event were exciting, but one of the highlights on the night was Norm Benning’s side-by-side door slamming battle with Clay Greenfield for the final transfer spot in the Last Chance Race. The event drew a bunch of dirt racing experts to enter the race with Austin Dillon - with experience in Dirt Late Models - scoring the win in one of his three series starts in 2013. Not only did Dillon win, but NASCAR scored a huge victory with the event's success along with Stewart and the staff at Eldora. Stewart's help in NASCAR's return to dirt helped earn him this year’s NMPA Myers Brothers Award.
