TALLADEGA, Ala. - Rain cancelled NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway. NASCAR set the lineup based on speeds in Friday's first practice session.
Aric Almirola will start on the pole for Sunday's Camping World RV Sales 500. Jeff Burton starts second. Almirola's Richard Petty Motorsports teammate, Marcos Ambrose, starts third. Martin Truex Jr. will be fourth with Carl Edwards fifth.
Greg Biffle starts sixth. David Ragan, who won the spring race, is seventh. He's followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray and Casey Mears.
Points leader Matt Kenseth starts 12th. Jimmie Johnson, who is second in the points, starts 11th.
The only driver that did not make the race was Sam Hornish Jr. in a third Penske Racing entry.
"We went into practice with a plan, me and Marcos, and we got a big run on the pack and put up a good lap,'' Almirola said. "We knew that there was a small chance for rain (Saturday). We thought it would be good to put up a good lap just in case it did rain. We had a plan, and we stuck to it and it worked out.
"We haven't been as good in the past as we wanted to at the speedway stuff and have continued to work at it and our cars have speed. Now we have to go race for 500 miles and avoid all the chaos and, hopefully, be there at the end.''
