KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Kevin Harvick scored his first pole since Sept. 2006 when he earned the top spot for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Harvick turned a lap of 187.526 mph to score his sixth career Sprint Cup Series pole and first since New Hampshire in 2006. He went on to win that race.

“I think the most exciting thing is the first pit stall,’’ Harvick said of the spoils of getting first pick of pit stalls. “We know this race is going to have a lot of pit strategy and being able to have that (pit stall) down there is definitely going to be worth qualifying first.”

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. qualified second.

“I knew of those guys going out early, if I could be somewhere around that group of guys that we would have a decent day,” said Stenhouse. “(Crew chief) Scott (Graves) and the guys made great changes.’’

Jimmie Johnson, who spun earlier in the day during practice, Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano rounded out the top five.

“We have speed in the car for sure,” said Johnson. “The track is slick today, and it’s gonna be interesting to see how much it changes (Saturday) and Sunday when the temperatures are cooler and there will be more grip. But happy with the lap and starting near the front is always a good day.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr., series point leader Matt Kenseth, Paul Menard, Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin completed the top 10.

"We're struggling a little bit, but getting better," said Kenseth, who won the April Kansas race. "We'll get the car ready for race trim (Saturday) and work on some things for Sunday."

Other Chasers include Jeff Gordon 14th, Kasey Kahne 15th, Ryan Newman 17th, Kyle Busch 18th, Kurt Busch 19th, Clint Bowyer 22nd and Greg Biffle 26th.

Sprint Cup Series teams will practice Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s fourth race of the Chase.

Motor Racing Network - "The Voice of NASCAR" - will have live coverage of Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 beginning at 1 p.m. (ET), with live streaming at MRN.com.
