RICHMOND, Va. - Ryan Newman says he’s ready to say where he’ll be driving next season, but that "it’s just not the right time."

Newman said he expects to talk about where he’ll drive next year "shortly."  Multiple media reports state that Newman could be headed to Richard Childress Racing.  The team announced this week that Jeff Burton won’t be back after this season, indicating it did not have enough sponsorship to fund four cars.  Paul Menard will be back next season and Austin Dillon will move to Cup, leaving one open spot.

Newman was told in July that he would not be back with Stewart-Haas Racing after this season.  Tony Stewart said at the time that the team was "not ready to expand to a fourth team."

About a month later, co-owner Gene Haas said the team would expand to a fourth car, adding Kurt Busch.  It led some to question Stewart’s sincerity in his comment about not being ready to expand.

"I was pretty disappointed to hear Kyle Petty say that we basically lied to Ryan and deceived Ryan," Stewart said this week in his first public comments since his season-ending sprint car crash.  "Deceived was the word that he used, actually.  They said we deceived (Newman) at Loudon in doing this.

"Gene addressed this.  This literally came up while they were at Indy at the Brickyard and they were at a Chevy dinner, and that's where the conversation of doing the fourth team for next year ... that's when it started."

Newman said Thursday that he didn’t feel betrayed.

"I don't think Tony lied to me," he said.  "I don't think anybody lied to me.  I don't have any of that feeling or emotion.  I don't think any of that matters because the plans they made are for 2014 and I'm not part of that.  I knew that going in.

"I don't think there were any hidden agendas on Tony's behalf.  I had a good relationship with him and (have) been up front with him.  My communication has been mostly with him in my whole relationship at Stewart-Haas Racing."

Newman’s focus has been securing a ride for next season and making the Chase.  He heads into Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway holding the final Wild Card spot because of his win in July at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"I think no matter what, trying to figure out anybody's future is somewhat of a distraction," Newman said.  "When it compares to living in the present, trying to figure out and perform like we need to perform for the Chase, I think it takes a pretty good mind to separate all those things.

"I think if you look at somebody like me and Kurt, I think we've done well managing that.  I think in the end, it is a big challenge.  But that's what we enjoy, challenges.  We're out there competing against 42 other people to try to win a race.  Don't expect anything to be easy."

Motor Racing Network – “The Voice of NASCAR” – will have live coverage of Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 from Richmond International Raceway at 6:30 p.m. (ET), with live streaming at MotorRacingNetwork.com.
