Denny Hamlin told SiriusXM Radio on Thursday night that he suffered a wrist injury in the same crash that injured Martin Truex Jr. last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Hamlin told host Claire B. Lang that he is wearing a splint on his right hand. Hamlin said his injury is “just a major jam ... more ligament stuff. Mine will heal in no time.’’
Truex suffered a scaphoid fracture and sprain of his right wrist. He was fitted with a special cast Tuesday. Hamlin and Truex both will race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Both drivers were injured in an eight-car crash on lap 448 at Bristol.
“I guess we had the same thing happen,’’ Hamlin told SiriusXM Radio. “His was obviously worse. I couldn't get my finger out of the wheel quick enough before it spun, and obviously kind of took some ligaments with it. I feel his pain, and it's going to be tough.
“You can see on (Truex’s) in-car replay he didn't get his hands out of the wheel before it started. The wheel got spun out of his hand while he was hitting something. And mine did the same daggone thing. So bad luck just continues to follow us."
Hamlin said he knows the struggles Truex is likely to face this weekend.
“I tested on Monday and Tuesday at Chicago and I couldn't put my thumb on the wheel, so that's something that (Truex is) going to have to fight over these next six or seven weeks or so while it is healing,’’ Hamlin told SiriusXM Radio. “I've had this injury before. It's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it really can affect how you grip the steering wheel."
Truex enters this weekend holding one of the two Wild Card spots for the Chase. Hamlin is not in contention for a Chase spot. He missed four races after suffering an L1 compression fracture in a last-lap crash in March at Auto Club Speedway.
Hamlin marks the third driver injured in the last week. Bobby Labonte broke three ribs in a cycling accident Wednesday near his Trinity, N.C., home. Mike Bliss will replace Labonte for Phoenix Racing this weekend. Labonte was released from a hospital Thursday after spending the night.
