Goodyear’s Busy Test Schedule Continues

Goodyear's busy testing schedule for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series continues this summer with return trips to Kansas Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway in the coming weeks.

The Cup Series' first trip to Kansas back in April was the second race held on the repaved 1.5-mile track that was reconfigured with 17-20 degrees of progressive banking. Cup teams ran the same combination of left- and right-side tires in the race after it was repaved for last October's event. But based on changes to the track over the winter, Goodyear will return for a test July 16-17 with the No. 16 (Roush Fenway Racing), No. 18 (Joe Gibbs Racing) and No. 78 (Furniture Row Racing) teams.

"There were a lot of comments that the race track seemed to have lost some grip (since repave) from last year to this year, so we sat down with NASCAR and decided that it would probably be best to go back and test there," said Greg Stucker, director of Racing Tire Sales for Goodyear. "Historically, guys don't like to have a change between the first race and the second race, particularly at a track like Kansas that's in the Chase. But I think everybody collectively said there's enough of a change there; let's go back and test."

Goodyear recently completed a two-day test at Atlanta Motor Speedway on June 18-19 but will return to the 1.54-mile speedway Aug. 6 for a confirmation test with team selections still to be determined.

"We went back and poured over the data," Stucker said. "Looks like we'll be coming back with a different right-side tire versus what we have raced there the last couple years. We're putting the final touches on that, but it looks like that's the way we'll be going. Cars were plenty fast and pretty tough on right sides. It's a big, fast race track with long corners so we're seeing a lot of wear and a lot of heat. That's why we feel like a right-side change is warranted for that track."

The AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta will be held Sept. 1 and the Kansas Chase race, the Hollywood Casino 400, will be run Oct. 6.

Other Goodyear tests conducted already this season came at Daytona International Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway.

This weekend’s Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona will see Cup teams run two new tire codes that feature a compound change on both sides of the car and a construction change to the left side, bringing it into line with what's been run at other tracks.

The tire combination for the July 28 Crown Royal Presents the "Your Hero's Name Here" 400 at Indianapolis was set based off the test at the end of April.

"It went real well," Stucker said of the Indy test. "We're going to end up staying with the same right-side tires, but we'll run a different left. We'll actually run the same left-side tire that we raced at Phoenix. It seemed to have a little more grip and gave a good package combined with the right-side tire that we already race there."

Phoenix will be one of the upcoming Goodyear tests along with pre-2014 sessions at Richmond International Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway later this fall.
