SONOMA, Calif. _ AJ Allmendinger will drive for JTG Daugherty next week at Kentucky Speedway, car owner Tad Geschickter told Motor Racing Network on Saturday.
It will be the second of five races Allmendinger is scheduled to drive the No. 47 car in place of Bobby Labonte, as JTG Daugherty seeks to uncover what has caused its struggles this season. Labonte is driving the car at Sonoma and starts 20th in Sunday’s race.
Allmendinger drove for the team last week at Michigan, finishing 19th - the team’s best result since Richmond in late April. Allmendinger also is scheduled to drive for the team at Watkins Glen. The other two races he’s scheduled to run with JTG have not been determined. Geschickter said that Labonte will drive for the team in all three NASCAR Sprint Cup races in July: Daytona, New Hampshire and Indianapolis.
“What we’re trying to do as a single-car team, it’s impossible to benchmark everything a two-car team does,’’ Geschickter said. “I think we set realistic goals at the beginning of the season. We’re behind meeting those goals.’’
The team is 28th in the car owner standings and its best finish is 15th with Labonte in the Daytona 500.
Geschickter said that they’re looking at several areas but putting different drivers in the car also allows the team to analyze the motors, which are provided by Triad Racing Technologies.
“It’s very helpful to Triad, too,’’ Geschickter said. “As different drivers give different feedback, they get more specifics on where they can improve just like we do. Bobby has given his opinion on aero, steering compliance, torque horsepower. Getting another opinion like these multi-car teams get is just going to help us get closer to our goals this season.’’
Geschickter continues to back Labonte.
“I think people are trying to make this more about Bobby vs. AJ,’’ he said. “For us, it’s all about JTG Daugherty vs. JTG Daugherty, how do we get closer to achieving our goals with this new Gen-6 Camry.’’
