CONCORD, N.C. - Penske Racing lost its appeal of the penalties to Brad Keselowski’s and Joey Logano’s teams Wednesday but car owner Roger Penske said he’ll take the matter to the National Stock Car Racing Chief Appellate Officer.

The unanimous decision was announced about six hours after the appeal started.

The decision isn’t surprising. Seventy percent of the 150 appeals heard since 1999 were upheld by the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel, according to NASCAR.

Now, the appeal will go to John Middlebrook, the chief appellate office and former General Motors executive. No date has been set for the hearing. His decision is final.

Team owner Roger Penske led a six-person delegation at the hearing that included Walt Czarnecki, vice chairman of Penske Racing, Tim Cindric, president of Penske Racing, Travis Geisler, competition director and crew chiefs Paul Wolfe and Todd Gordon.

NASCAR penalized the Penske teams for issues found with the suspension of both cars. The irregularities were discovered in inspection before April 13 race at Texas Motor Speedway.

NASCAR cited rule 20-12, which covers more than two pages on suspensions, in the Sprint Cup Series Rule Book in levying the penalties against Penske Racing.

The infractions cited were that all suspension systems and components must be submitted for approval. All suspension fasteners and mounting hardware must be made of solid magnetic steel. All suspension mounts with mounting hardware assembled must have single round mounting holes that are the correct size for the fastener being used. All suspension mounts and mounting hardware must not allow movement or realignment or any suspension component beyond normal rotation or suspension travel.

The penalties to Keselowski’s team:

  • Wolfe was fined $100,000 and suspended for six Cup points races (and the Sprint All-Star race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31
  • Car chief Jerry Kelley, engineer Brian Wilson each were suspended for the next six Cup points races (and the All-Star race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31
  • Keselowski lost 25 driver points.
  • Penske lost 25 car owner points

The penalties to Logano’s team:

  • Gordon was fined $100,000 and suspended for six Cup points races (and the All-Star race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
  • Car chief Raymond Fox and engineer Samuel Stanley each were suspended six Cup points races (and the Sprint All-Star race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
  • Logano lost 25 driver points
  • Czarnecki, who is listed as the car owner for Penske Racing, lost 25 car owner points.

Also, Travis Geisler, Penske Racing’s competition director, was suspended for six Cup points races (and the Sprint All-Star race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
