DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Nine Sprint Cup Series teams shook down tires for Goodyear on Tuesday and Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the July 6 Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola.
Drivers who participated in both single-car runs and drafting sessions were Trevor Bayne, Greg Biffle, Austin Dillon, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Michael McDowell, Jamie McMurray, Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. All three of NASCAR's participating manufacturers - Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota - were represented.
Drivers turned laps under the lights on Tuesday and again Wednesday during the day.
"Goodyear is looking for different compounds and different sidewall constructions," said Biffle, who won the Coke Zero 400 in 2003. "This gives us a chance to get some data, try a few things and get ready for the summer race."
Patrick is coming off a successful Budweiser Speedweeks during which she became the first woman to win a pole for a Sprint Cup Series race and followed that with an eighth-place finish in the Daytona 500.
"It would be great to qualify on the pole again," Patrick said, looking ahead to her return to "The World Center of Racing." "Hopefully through testing, I'll be more prepared for the end of the race. I feel like you’ll see an even more exciting race in (July) because it'll be hotter, maybe a little more slippery.
"I found myself trying some things just to get a better feel for when you take chances. I wasn’t really in position to take chances in the race (in February). Doing it out there in testing is good. Everybody is going to learn and it will make the racing better."
The Coke Zero 400 Weekend Powered By Coca-Cola kicks off with the Subway Firecracker 250 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Friday, July 5. The Sprint Cup Series then takes center stage with the 55th annual Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola on Saturday, July 6.
Motor Racing Network - "The Voice of NASCAR" - will have live coverage of both races, with live streaming at MotorRacingNetwork.com.
