9/4 Update: 4:03 p.m. Official Release

Joey Logano is expected to join Penske Racing to take over the Shell/Pennzoil No. 22 Sprint Cup Series ride.

The Charlotte Observer reports Logano will leave Joe Gibbs Racing, where he has spent his entire NASCAR career, for Penske with an announcement expected as early as Tuesday.

JGR will officially introduce Matt Kenseth as driver of the Home Depot Toyota on Tuesday, a move that has forced Logano to find a new home.

The Gibbs organization had hoped to keep Logano in the fold to pilot either a fourth Sprint Cup car if sponsorship could be found or possibly to run full-time in the Nationwide Series.

Logano's signing means Sam Hornish Jr., who had inherited driving duties when AJ Allmendinger was suspended and then released by Penske after failing NASCAR's substance abuse program, will either stay in the Nationwide Series or potentially drive a third Cup car for the team.
