Bayne Back in the Saddle at Texas

Trevor Bayne is preparing for his first Sprint Cup Series start since Las Vegas, behind the wheel of the Wood Brothers Ford in Saturday night’s Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

The 2011 Daytona 500 winner had a strong run at LVMS last month, coming home 10th to cap a day that was full of struggles but ultimately ended on a positive note.

“A top 10 feels like a win to us, especially with how hard we had to fight all day,” Bayne said.  “We got the 'Lucky Dog' one time, but stayed on the lead lap for the majority of every run except for one.”

Team co-owner Eddie Wood was pleased with the effort at Las Vegas and is hoping to keep that momentum going when the crew unloads at Texas later this week.

“It’s good to know our car will be competitive on the mile-and-a-half tracks,” Wood said.  “We ran this same car at Charlotte and Texas last fall, and had good runs going but we didn’t get to finish off those races.”

Bayne and the Wood Brothers continue to march forward with their 2012 plans that will again see a limited schedule for the legendary No. 21 Ford.  The team hopes to field an entry for 12-14 races but is still pursuing sponsorship in hopes of adding to that slate.

“We’re always looking and continue to do that,” Wood said.  “Right now, we’ll just concentrate on the races we have committed to and Texas is the next one up this weekend.”

Bayne is doing his best to deal with not having a full-time ride in either the Sprint Cup or Nationwide Series this season with sponsorship and funding driving the circumstances.  But he remains positive that things will work themselves out and remains focused when he does get the chance to drive in either series.

“It’s not something anyone wants,” Bayne said, “but it’s the reality of what we’re dealing with on both the Cup and Nationwide side.  All we can do is stay positive and take advantage of the opportunity when we do get on track.”

Bayne won last November’s Nationwide Series race at Texas, his first career victory in NASCAR’s No. 2 division. So it’s a bitter pill to swallow knowing that despite that success, he won’t have a chance to try for a second straight series win at the track in Friday night’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 300.

“I wish I could be back in the Roush Fenway (Racing) Mustang,” Bayne said.  “It just didn’t come together sponsorship-wise and yes, I’m disappointed because that pretty much ends any chance of running for a championship by missing a race.  But I understand the situation even if I’m disappointed by it.”

Bayne will concentrate on Saturday night’s Sprint Cup Series race and hopes his past success at Texas – which also includes a 17th-place finish in his series debut in 2010 - will translate into a solid outing this weekend.

“For me to be able to represent the Wood Brothers and get back to the track where I have had some level of success is important to me," Bayne said.  "It's so difficult to run consistently well every week, let alone run well in a part-time deal.

“We face uphill battles and have some challenges to overcome as a single-car team. Nonetheless, I'm proud of how we have responded as a team.  We got a Top 10 at Las Vegas a few weeks back, which was huge for us.  Hopefully, we can put together a similar run and let everybody know we are a team to be reckoned with whenever we enter a race.”
