Kasey Kahne won his third career Las Vegas Motor Speedway pole and set a track record with a lap of 190.456 mph to earn the top spot for Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400.

The pole was Kahne’s first for Hendrick Motorsports and the 23rd of his Sprint Cup Series career.

“The Hendrick engines – it’s unreal how well they run, and it was the same way last week at Phoenix,” Kahne said. “It was a great effort by the team. It was great to win the pole today. I always like racing at Vegas. We haven’t won here, but we’ve run pretty well at times, so it will be a good race Sunday.”

Kahne has gotten off to a frustrating start to his first year with Hendrick involved in a pair of crashes at Daytona and Phoenix. However he’s confident the team can bounce back and looks forward to starting that process Sunday at Las Vegas.

“It’s disappointing the way things have gone the last two weeks but we’re not getting down about it,” Kahne said. “There’s a lot of racing yet to go and we just need to do what we know we’re capable of doing and everything will be all right.”

Kyle Busch will start outside row one in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

A total of 16 drivers broke the previous track qualifying record in the session.

Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Clint Bowyer were the rest of the fast five.

Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Joey Logano, Greg Biffle and Martin Truex Jr. completed the first ten qualifiers.

Defending race winner Carl Edwards qualified 21st.

Scott Riggs and Robby Gordon failed to make Sunday’s race.

Sprint Cup Series teams will have a pair of practice sessions on Saturday.
