Team owner Joe Gibbs was in full agreement with NASCAR’s decision to park driver Kyle Busch for the remainder of the Texas weekend.
Gibbs held a media session Saturday morning at Texas Motor Speedway to address the sanctioning body’s ruling to sit Busch for Saturday’s Nationwide Series and Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series races after Friday night’s incident with Ron Hornaday in the Camping World Truck Series event.
“I take full responsibility for it,” Gibbs said. “What we are going to try to do now, other things that have happened in the past, we’ve tried to handle those things the right way, tried to make the right decisions and certainly that’s what we’re going to try to do with this.”
Gibbs met with NASCAR Saturday morning and said, given the circumstances, he was in agreement with the course of action.
“I always trust NASCAR,” Gibbs said. “I think they do a great job. It’s grown because of them and the way they handle it. I have great faith in the decisions they make.
“We’ve been a part of this for a long time and we love it. ... I think our sport is where it is because of NASCAR and the way they handle things. This was a tough one for us, but as I mentioned, sometimes in life you go through tough things. You don’t like it, but we’re certainly going to try to work our way through this one and try and handle it the right way.”
Whether or not more penalties come from the situation, Gibbs said the incident has been a stressful one for his organization but vowed to move forward in a responsible manner.
“This is a tough situation for us,” Gibbs said. “Basically what we are trying to do is go through it the right way.
“Everybody here with our race team is trying to meet with everybody that was affected by this and obviously we’ve got a lot of work to do there and a lot of people to see. But we’re going to be trying to go through this and try to handle everything in the right way.”
