Ryan Newman scored his third pole at Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday in qualifying for tomorrow night's IRWIN Tools Night Race.

Newman turned a lap of 122.811 mph to earn his first pole at the .533-mile track since 2004.

Newman hopes to replicate his last start from the pole when he went to Victory Lane last month at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

It was Newman’s 48th career Sprint Cup pole, which ranks him 10th on the all-time list.

After winning Wednesday night’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Bristol, Newman is hoping to cap the weekend with another victory and a boost to his position in the Chase.

“From our team standpoint if you look at the last six races, with the exception of the road course races, we have been really strong and we have had a really good average,” said Newman, who comes into the weekend seventh in the Sprint Cup Series point standings. “And I am not going to say we can do that the next six races, because that is reading into the future and we are not capable of doing that but I feel we have the tools that we need and our team is clicking and our performance has been good.

“You know we are not out there leading the most laps every other race but when it comes to finishes and whether we are in the media center or in the top-ten, we are knocking on the door of both of them.”

Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin rounded out the top five.

Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Kurt Busch completed the first ten finishers.

While Newman was celebrating his pole-winning run, his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate had the 42nd slowest time of the 46 cars that took part in the session.

T.J. Bell, J.J. Yeley and Jeff Green failed to make Saturday’s field.

Saturday night’s IRWIN Tools Night Race will take the green flag at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
