Ragan Races to Brickyard Pole

David Ragan

INDIANAPOLIS – David Ragan’s lap of 182.994 mph earned him the top spot for Sunday’s 18th running of the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Ragan, who scored his first career Sprint Cup Series victory earlier this month in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway, will lead the field to green in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

It was the second pole of his career with the first coming at Texas Motor Speedway back in April.

“Just an honor to be on the pole here at Indianapolis for this race,” Ragan said. “This team had a great car here for us this weekend and this should be just a fun day tomorrow we hope will end as well as today did.”

Since winning at Daytona on the Fourth of July weekend Ragan has been one of the hottest drivers in the series moving from 21st to 13th in the point standings as he enters Sunday’s race at Indianapolis.

“We’ve worked extremely hard and that’s shown,” Ragan said. “We’re on a hot streak but it’s because everyone on this Roush Fenway Racing Ford.”

Kasey Kahne will start outside the front row in the Team Red Bull Toyota.

Jimmie Johnson and Penske Racing teammates Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five.

AJ Allmendinger, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards completed the first ten qualifiers.

Defending race winner Jamie McMurray will start 16th while other notables in the starting field include Dale Earnhardt Jr. (22nd) and Tony Stewart (24th).

Six drivers did not qualify for the race: David Stremme, Travis Kvapil, Erik Darnell, J.J. Yeley, Scott Wimmer and Robby Gordon.

Sunday’s Brickyard 400 will take the green flag at 1:15 p.m. (ET).
