Ryan Newman outran his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Tony Stewart to the checkered flag to score his first win of the season in Sunday's Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Newman and his crew were able to work out enough fuel mileage in their last run of the race for the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet to pick up the win.

It was Newman’s first victory since Phoenix in April of 2010 and put him in solid position for a berth in this Chase.

“It puts us in a lot better position that’s for sure,” said Newman, who is now eighth in the Sprint Cup Series standings. "Getting that win was a great bonus in itself. We've been so close so many times this year, we've finished in the top five but just haven't been able to get that win."

Newman was emotional in Victory Lane after winning the race from the pole position.

“We knew we were capable of it,” Newman said. “We were so close so many times this year.”

With the victory Newman became the 13th different driver to win a race in the first 19 events of the season. There were 13 winners all of last season.

Stewart, who was on his way to a win last September at New Hampshire before running out of fuel on the final lap, was able to also help his Chase chances with the second-place finish.

The runner-up run was Stewart’s second top five of the season.

“This was a perfect weekend,” Stewart said. “Just an awesome day for Stewart-Haas. We just needed one day where didn’t have something stupid go wrong.”

Denny Hamlin recovered from a spin just past the midway point to finish third with Joey Logano fourth.

Defending race winner Jimmie Johnson also came back from a spin after an incident with Juan Pablo Montoya to round out the top five.

“Anything that could have gone wrong today did,” Johnson said. “It started out with a bad qualifying effort on Friday and we paid the price for that on pit road and track position at the start; and then we had some issues on pit road.

“And then the No. 42 (Juan Pablo Montoya); I don’t think of the three times he’s wrecked me it’s been intentional, but he’s out of Mulligans and I’ve had enough of oh, I’m sorry, and you’re spun out. It’s happened way to often to the No. 48.”

Kasey Kahne, Bobby Labonte, Martin Truex Jr., Marcos Ambrose and Kurt Busch completed the first ten finishers.

The day did not go well for Kyle Busch, who came into the weekend as the series points leader. Busch cut a tire early in the race and made hard impact with the turn three wall. He was able to come back on track to finish 36th but dropped to fifth in standings.

The race was slowed by 10 cautions for a total of 44 laps. There were 21 lead changes among 14 different drivers.

Carl Edwards is back on top of the point standings by seven over Johnson with Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch the Top 10.

The Sprint Cup Series is off next weekend and returns to action on Sunday, July 31st with the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
