Disappointed Edwards Still Leads Standings

Carl Edwards had hopes to win Sunday at Michigan International Speedway that were dashed by a late race caution but he remains on top of the Sprint Cup Series point standings.

Edwards was in position to win Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at MIS and appeared to have enough fuel to make it the rest of the way as the race wound down.

But Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s trip into the wall to bring out the day’s fifth and final caution changed the complexion of the race and Edwards was shuffled back in the field on the last restart.

He was able to come home fifth but the Roush Fenway Racing driver had his sights set on a much better day.

“We had them, man,” Edwards said. “It was going great. I was having a good time and I thought we were going to end up with the victory there but they threw the caution.

“It is just frustrating being that close to a win. I thought we were going to get this thing. It’s just too bad.”

The fateful final green flag of the day caught Edwards in a traffic jam that included teammate Matt Kenseth and race winner Denny Hamlin.

“Matt spun his tires on the restart, and I got to him really quickly,” Edwards said. “I bumped once before the start/finish line.

“I probably should have tried to work below him and work him over pretty good. If he wasn’t my teammate I might have ran a little bit differently. But his car was fast enough, I thought he and I would team up there, run nose-to-tail and maybe beat Denny on the bottom.”

The good news for Edwards is that with Jimmie Johnson’s early troubles he was able to increase his point lead on the five-time champion to 20 with 15 races in the book.

The overall effort in the first half of the season has been one the entire team is proud of despite Sunday’s disappointment.

“The positive thing is we are building great race cars; we have fast race cars,” crew chief Bob Osborne said after Sunday’s race. “We’ve had some bad luck, bad decisions on my part and today we struggled a little bit on pit road on the last stop when we had to have the money stop.

“It wasn’t a terrible stop by any means. We were just outgunned on that last stop. We’ll just have to go to work on that and look at the details and look at what we can improve on.”
