It wasn’t the win he’d hoped for, but Marcos Ambrose will take Sunday’s fifth-place finish in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway.

Ambrose had downplayed the disappointment he experienced last year when his mental mistake late in the race gave up a chance to win on the Northern California road course.

However, the Richard Petty Motorsports driver went into the weekend motivated to turn in another strong road-course effort in pursuit of his first career Sprint Cup Series win.

After qualifying eighth, Ambrose experienced an ill-handling racecar at the beginning of the event and was forced to battle through some adjustments to get the Stanley Tools Ford running better.  The RPM crew did just that and as the race wore on, Ambrose was able to move toward the front of the field and at the end of the day, took the checkered flag with a top five for their efforts.

It was Ambrose's third top five since joining Richard Petty Motorsports at the start of the season, and his fifth top 10 in 16 races.

"I am so proud of my car and my team to get a top five out of what could have been a very tough day for me," Ambrose said.  "(Crew chief) Todd (Parrott) and the guys worked hard all day and got us into a good position there at the end.”

Ambrose had additional incentive to win the race with his sponsor promising to make a $1 million donation to the Children’s Miracle Network if he could have pulled off the victory.

Although he came up short of that goal, Ambrose was still proud of the performance.

"We weren't able to get the million dollars for the Children's Miracle Network but thanks to Stanley Tools, they will get $100,000,” he said.  "I want to thank Stanley for putting me in the car and believing in me.  I'm looking forward to what we can do the rest of the way and when we get to Watkins Glen."

Ambrose is now 21st in the Sprint Cup Series point standings and feels his team is moving in a positive direction as the season reaches the midway point.

“This year more than any other, I'm starting to get a feel for what I need to do to run well; and some of the tricks and techniques you need with all of the people around you to help make it happen,” Ambrose said.  “I don't know if we have an answer to Jimmie Johnson for a championship or Carl Edwards right now, but I'm working at it and our team is working at it.  I think it's just a matter of time."
