Edwards Puts Incident Behind

Carl Edwards is past last week’s scuffle with Kyle Busch at Phoenix International Raceway and is focused on trying to win Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The early race incident between Edwards and Busch last week at PIR cost the Roush Fenway Racing driver a chance to score his second straight win at the Arizona track. Although there were some hurt words exchanged after the tangle, Edwards says it’s all behind both drivers.

"Kyle and I did talk, yes,” Edwards said. “I kind of beat him up all week in the media saying he hadn’t called me yet, but he was calling my old phone number. He had the wrong number. I give him a lot of credit for coming over and talking to me and I think we will be fine.”

Edwards did say it took awhile for him to get over the contact that sent him spinning through the infield grass and that the longer the week went on the more difficult it was to forget about it.

“I was trying my hardest to give him the benefit of the doubt,” Edwards said. “Until you speak with someone. I don’t ever want to be that guy that just gets mad and angry and points fingers. I don’t want to be the guy who gets out of the car angry as hell at the wrong guy. I try to do my best to figure out what happened first.”

Edwards has another fast car this weekend and after qualifying third for Sunday’s third race of the season likes his chances of getting back to victory lane.

“I feel like we have the cars, at least at this point right now, that can compete for the win,” Edwards said. “There was a big unknown coming to a mile-and-a-half. Every time you come to that first mile-and-a-half race of the season, it means a lot. I would have loved to come in here the points leader with a win already, but this helps, being fast.”

The intermediate track program has been RFR’s bread and butter over the years and Edwards sees the team returning to that strength this season. He’d like nothing better than to add to his LVMS resume this weekend, which includes being a previous winner at the track.

“I’m excited to come to Vegas, we all like coming to Vegas,” he said. “The fans are great, the facility is second-to-none and the racing is spectacular. The win in 2008 was really special and I have to say that is one of the coolest victory lanes anywhere with showgirls, the title belt, champagne and fans everywhere.
