Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton were involved in an on-track incident that spilled over into a fight on the backstretch between the two veteran drivers.

The duo were in a tight duel for position on laps 191 when caution flew for Martin Truex Jr.’s trip into the wall after the Michael Waltrip Racing driver blew a tire.

But as that incident was happening, Burton and Gordon made contact in turn two with the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet going hard into the outside retaining wall and suffering heavy damage. Burton’s Caterpillar Chevrolet was also severely damaged and both drivers left their wrecked race cars to head to the infield medical center via ambulance.

But when Gordon walked up to Burton he lashed out angrily and shoved him, setting off a heated fight that had to be broken up by NASCAR officials.

Both drivers were treated and released from the care center.

Burton took complete blame for instigating the chain of events.

“I turned left and he turned left and we hung up and off we went. It was my fault, it was 100 percent my fault,” Burton said. “I don’t blame him for being mad. I would have been mad, too.

“He was upset and he should have been upset. I wrecked him under caution," Burton acknowledged. "I didn’t mean to wreck, but I wrecked him under caution. I don’t have a bit of problem with what he did.”

Gordon wasn’t taking Burton’s apology to heart and remained visibly angered by the situation.

"I guess he was really frustrated with the way his car was handling or something and he just drove into my right-rear under caution,” Gordon said. “Of all the people out there, I never thought that would happen with Jeff Burton.

“I have had a lot of respect for Jeff, but I have certainly lost a lot of respect for him today.”

Burton was credited with a 36th-place finish while Gordon finished 37th.
