NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway was rained out after 12 cars posted a time.

The race will now be set by the rule book placing series points leader Kevin Harvick on the pole.

Harvick was ninth on the chart before the rains came.

“For us we didn’t have a lot of speed in our car for qualifying trim and we had already qualified so obviously that will make things easier at the beginning of the race to get going," Harvick said. "I think our car drives really well and that is going to be the key to both races this weekend to be able to keep the throttle on the floor for more than four or five laps is a good thing."

Jimmie Johnson, who is seeking his third consecutive Sprint Cup win of the season, will start second.

"We were one of a few cars able to make a run," Johnson said. "It was a good lap and it would have been interesting to see where we ended up. Regardless we have a good Kobalt Tools Chevrolet for tomorrow night.

"The guys did a great job getting the car ready. We'll get to start up front with a good pit stall and we'll see what happens from there."

Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin will start third and fourth, respectively, in backup cars after incidents in yesterday's practice sessions. However, Hamlin will have to move to the rear of the field because he did not get on track in practice with his backup.

Six-time Daytona winner Jeff Gordon will round out the top five.

Sam Hornish Jr. was showing the way in qualifying before the rain hit with a lap of 188.194 mph, but will now have to start 30th.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was second quick at the time, will start 13th.

Michael McDowell and Todd Bodine failed to qualify for the 160-lap race.

Saturday's Coke Zero 400 is scheduled to take the green flag at 7:30 p.m. (ET). MRN Radio's coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
