Solid Rally For Busch

Post-Race Loop Data eBook

Kyle Busch came back from an early race crash and other assorted problems to score a very impressive ninth-place finish in Sunday's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch battled an ill-handling car pretty much the entire weekend and the situation was compounded when a cut tire sent him slamming the wall early in Sunday's race.

But he was able to regroup and drive his battered car home to a top-10 finish, which vaulted him into the 10th spot of the Sprint Cup Series point standings.

“We want to run better, but you need to make the bad days the best you can if you want to make the Chase and have a shot at a championship,” Busch said. “We did what we needed to do today.”

After sweeping both Sprint Cup races at Bristol a year ago, Busch was a pre-race favorite to make a third straight trip to victory lane.

But a different tire compound from Goodyear sent Busch and crew chief Dave Rogers searching for the right set-up all weekend long, which finally paid off when the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota came around near the end of the race.

"It just wasn’t the kind of car we wanted to bring back here to Bristol,” Busch said. “We just worked from behind all weekend long. The right front went down and I got into the wall there in about the middle of the race and things didn’t look good. The guys never gave up and I never gave up and somehow we got a decent finish out of it.”

The finish was Busch's first top 10 of the season and Rogers was pleased with how things ended up after a rough start.

"We’ve had a couple of top-10 cars this year and we didn’t get those finishes,” Rogers said. “Now we probably didn’t have a top-10 car and we got a top-10 finish. It was definitely a positive thing for us. But we have some work to do. We know we’re trying to build this program. To come out of here with our first top-10 of the year, we’ll take it.”
