Jimmie Johnson erased Bristol Motor Speedway from the list of tracks where he had never won a Sprint Cup Series race at with a victory in Sunday's Food City 500.

A good restart in the final 10-lap shootout proved to be the winning move for Johnson after the team took four tires on the last pit stop. When the field went back to green Johnson stormed around Tony Stewart for the top spot with six laps-to-go and went on to score his 50th career Sprint Cup Series win.

"We have worked so hard for this. I thought we were in trouble there but those four tires were everything – and I was in the outside line, which was helpful," said Johnson, who has one victory in 17 career starts at the track. "It's about time.

"Yes, it has been one of the most difficult for us. It is so great to set some goals and go out and accomplish them as a race team. I am so proud of what we have done as a group. We've been off here over the years. We focused on what we needed to do and got it done today."

With the win, Johnson became the fourth fastest driver to 50 Cup wins (296 races), trailing only Jeff Gordon (232), Darrell Waltrip (278) and David Pearson (293).

Stewart finished second after taking two tires on the last stop for his first top five of the season.

"We were too loose the run before that and couldn't get the track position we lost there," Stewart said. "He (Darian Grubb, crew chief) left it to me, so whether I made the right call or not, I don't know. Darian and these guys did an awesome job.

Kurt Busch, who dominated the race - leading 278 laps, finished third after taking four tires on the last stop.

"We just got beat at the end on the luck of the draw on restarts," Busch said. "That’s what our sport is about…luck on which lane is going to go. I don’t’ know, I’d rather lose to any of the 41 cars out there than the 48 car. I thought we had them beat. I gave it my heart today, but came up short."

The Roush Fenway teammates of Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards rounded out the top six. Biffle was the only among the trio that led laps, after he held his No. 16 Ford out front for 78 laps.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished seventh and moved five positions to eighth in the standings.

Jamie McMurray was eighth and Kyle Busch battled an ill-handiling car all weekend and a cut tire during the race to finish an impressive ninth. Jeff Burton, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top 12.

The day's biggest tangle involved 13 cars. On Lap 343, Biffle made contact with Mark Martin racing down the backstretch. After hitting the wall, Martin swerved to the inside of the track heading into turn three and was hit hard in the rear by Marcos Ambrose, who them touched Jeff Gordon to set off a chain reaction crash.
