Off Weekend Still A Busy Time

The Sprint Cup Series has the weekend off, but that doesn't mean NASCAR drivers, team members and owners will be sitting idle until things pick up the following week in Indianapolis.

Some will be racing or working during the third down week of the Cup schedule, while others will tend to more personal affairs.

Red Bull Racing Team driver Scott Andrew Speed will wed Amanda Smith Mathis on Saturday, July 18th in a black and white-themed ceremony and reception. The couple, who wrote their own vows, will say "I do" at the 55-acre Graylyn Estate in Winston Salem, NC in front of 120 of their closest friends and family. They were engaged in November 2008.

"I'm really excited for our wedding this weekend, for sure!" Speed said. "Amanda has put a lot of planning into this wedding so I know it will be a really fun evening. We have a lot of family and friends coming in town to see us tie the knot, so it will be nice to hang out and have some fun with everyone. What can I say - head first, here we go!"

Clint Bowyer is heading to Kansas to spend the off-week with friends and family. He will be working on getting some things set up for his charity golf tournament in August and enjoying time on the lake.

Meanwhile, Bowyer's RCR teammate Kevin Harvick will be behind the wheel when he drives in Saturday night's NASCAR Nationwide Series at Gateway International Raceway outside of St. Louis.

Kyle Busch, Reed Sorenson and Carl Edwards are also entered in the Nationwide Series Race. While many drivers will make their way to Gateway via planes, trains and automobiles, Edwards is the exemption. For the fourth year in a row, Edwards will make his annual trek from Columbia, Mo. to Gateway International Raceway via bicycle. The first leg of the ride was from Columbia to McBaine via the Katy Trail on Tuesday, July 14th. The public was invited to join in exchange for a $50 donation to benefit the Sam Russell Helmet Safety Foundation. Sam (also from Columbia) is a friend of Carl’s who was injured in a bike accident. The foundation helps to pay for Sam’s rehabilitation. For more information please contact Randy Fuller at (704)507-1726.

Other drivers will be on track in other ways, including Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne. The duo will return to their roots as open-wheeled winged Sprint Car drivers and participate in Eldora Speedway’s Kings Royal weekend. “Any time I can get behind the wheel of a Sprint Car, I look back and appreciate my career," said Stewart, who also owns the prestigious Eldora track.

RCR's No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet crew chief, Gil Martin, is doing something much quieter. He’ll be camping with his family.

Jeff Burton, driver of the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet, is spending the off-weekend with his wife, Kim, and kids relaxing on an island off the East Coast. They will be joined by members of the extended family, as well. His crew chief, Scott Miller, will also be sitting on a beach, but sticking to the mainland in South Carolina celebrating his daughter’s fourth birthday.

Casey Mears and Todd Berrier, driver and crew chief on the No. 07 Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet, have put a lot of thought into their off-weekend scheduling. And, after much debate and deciding, they’ve come up with a master plan – they don’t know what they’re going to do … yet. But, Berrier does know one thing for sure; he will take Friday off to make it a three-day weekend.

Team owner Richard Childress will make his way to the mountains, where he’ll enjoy time at his Montana retreat.

Jeff Gordon is scheduled to be an award presenter at The 2009 ESPYs. The 2009 ESPYs will be taped tonight, July 15 from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles and televised Sunday, July 19 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN HD.
