SHAMELESS PLUG: JOIN ME FOR THIS SUNDAY'S EDITION OF "THE BACKSTRETCH" ON SIRIUS NASCAR RADIO FROM 11 - 2 P.M. ET

I'm not on the road this weekend and as much as I love Richmond International Raceway I'm glad to be at home base.

Walking into that media center is going to be tough for all of my colleagues without David Poole ruling the roost.

Poole was the leader of the press corps bar none and his presence was felt each and every weekend.

But not he's gone and there's a giant hole in the coverage of this sport. And quite frankly media centers and covering NASCAR races won't ever be the same.

The show goes on however as it always does in auto racing when tragedy strikes. A fallen driver or crew member or in this case media member saddens the state of the sport and gives pause for reflection.

However after the necessary time to grieve the show always goes on, which is really as much a part of the respect for the person lost as anything else.

In this case I can guarantee you David Poole would have been rolling his eyes and telling us to just get on with it. We've spent the last three days mourning his loss, paying tribute to his work and personality and paying respect to the people he left behind.

Now it is time to get back to the business at hand and in the case of NASCAR it's this weekend's racing in Richmond.

It may seem harsh to some but it is part of auto racing's fabric. We race always and in some cases to remember.

There will probably be a moment of silence for Poole in the media center and maybe even before the green flag flies Saturday night.

Other tributes are also planned I understand including a decal in Carolina Blue (Poole was a UNC alum) being run by many teams.

In the end we'll focus our attention on the 400 laps of racing Saturday night and whatever storylines come out of the race.

And that's exactly what Poole would want.
