Bristol Belongs To Busch

Kyle Busch dominated the day but still had to hold off teammate Denny Hamlin on a green-white-checkered finish to win Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Busch led 378 of the 503 laps and the overtime finish was set-up by Joey Logano's blown engine late in the race. On the final restart, Busch was able to hold off his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Hamlin for his second Sprint Cup win of the season.

"We should have won here last fall and we should have won here yesterday," Busch said of coming up short in last August's Sprint Cup race at Bristol and Saturday's Nationwide Series race, when a loose tire on a late race pit stop cost him a chance at winning. "We've had so many great cars here. This place probably owes me a few, but you can never ask a race track to pay you back. You just have to keep working."

Busch took the lead on lap 445 and drove home without a serious challenge the rest of the way.

It was Busch's 14th career Cup win and his second at Bristol, the first track where he has scored multiple wins in NASCAR's top division.

A Busch brother has won the past three races. Kyle Busch won at Las Vegas earlier this month, and Kurt followed it with a win at Atlanta. Kurt Busch, a five-time Bristol winner, finished 11th on Sunday.

Hamlin posted his third straight top 10 at Bristol with his second-place finish.

"We had a long-run car, we just didn't have a short-run car, but it's great to get a 1-2 finish for Joe Gibbs Racing," Hamlin said.

Hamlin tried to get close to Busch on the final restart but didn't have enough to mount a serious threat to the eventual winner.

“He just has a way of taking off really, really good on the short run,” Hamlin said. “I knew unless we got out on pit road ahead of him on that last pit stop, it was going to be tough.”

Jimmie Johnson was able to stay in front of his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon to finish fourth with Kasey Kahne rounding out the top five.

“What a day for us. I wish we had 500 more laps to go,” Johnson said. “I have to thank (crew chief) Chad (Knaus) and the engineering staff for sitting me down a couple weeks ago to look at this race track and what I need here. I made my wish list and they gave me what I needed.”

Pole sitter Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, last year's race winner Jeff Burton, Juan Pablo Montoya and Marcos Ambrose completed the first ten finishers.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series now heads to Virginia's Martinsville Speedway for next Sunday's Goody's Fast Relief 500.
