Petty GEM Merger Possible

Several reports have Gillett Evernham Motorsports acquiring Petty Enterprises and its No. 43 car driven by Bobby Labonte.

“We don’t comment on rumors and speculation," said . I have no idea where that’s coming from,” Petty Enterprises Chief Executive Officer David Zucke told NASCAR Scene. “I really have no idea. If we have something to say, we’ll say it. We have no comment on speculation.”

GEM was rumored to have a merger deal with Bill Davis Racing several weeks ago that fell through.

The No. 43 Petty Enterprises ride does not have sponsorship announced for 2009 after losing General Mills to Richard Childress Racing.

But the entry is locked into the first five races of the season by virtue of finishing in the Top 35 in the 2008 standings.
