Season Review: Kyle Busch

If anyone ever fit the description of a "Tale of Two Seasons" in 2008, it was Kyle Busch.

Busch rolled through the Sprint Cup Series regular season, winning eight of the year's first 26 races in sometimes domination fashion.

But when Chase time came around, Busch's season went in a completely opposite direction.

He started the playoffs with three straight dismal races and before the calendar turned to October was hopelessly out of the championship picture.

"Sure it was not the way we wanted to end the year of course," said Busch, who made the move from Hendrick Motorsports to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008. "But it was still a great season and one we can build on."

In addition to his eight Sprint Cup wins, Busch tied the Nationwide Series single-season mark scoring ten wins to equal the feat of the legendary Sam Ard. He also scored three Craftsman Truck Series victories for an amazing 21 victories in NASCAR's top three divisions.

But Busch also generated much fan reaction in 2008 and evolved into the sport's villain, a role he seemed to relish.

"I came into the sport and was booed from the very beginning,” Busch said. “Probably because my brother [Kurt] wasn’t a fan favorite at the time. Fans who didn’t like him put us together and decided they couldn’t like me.”

Rather than fighting that reception, Busch decided to run with it.

As soon as I began to embrace it, the tide started to turn,” he said. “I started to hear cheers mixed in with the boos."

"It’s a lot easier to play this role when you’re winning. I can take all that fuel the fans provide and burn it on the track.”
