Jeff Gordon ended the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season with a string of solid finishes, but failed to reach Victory Lane for the first time since his rookie year in 1993.

Gordon captured seven top 10s in the Chase en route to his seventh-place in the standings. Although his points finish was his worst in four appearances in the 10-race playoffs, Gordon says the season wasn't a disappointment.

“To me this is definitely not at all one of our worst seasons," Gordon said. "I look at 2000, and 2005 when we missed the Chase. Those were much worse years and we won races in those seasons.

"You make the Chase, you’re not having a really bad year.”

The No. 24 Dupont Team finished fourth in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway for their 13th top five of the year. The finish came in Gordon's last ride behind the current No. 24 Dupont paint scheme before switching to a new design in 2009.

"We showed what we are made of and we are not going to give up," Gordon said about his run from the 37th starting position at Homestead. "We didn't win a race this year, but I am really excited about 2009. We have got a lot of great things happening."

Gordon finished in the runner-up spot twice this season at Martinsville (spring) and Texas (fall). He led the most laps (90) in one race in 2008 at Martinsville after starting from one of his four poles on the year.

"It was an awesome with a lot of cool stuff going on out there with guys swapping the lead,” Gordon said after the race. “It came down to pit strategy and Denny (Hamlin) had the right call at the end.”

Heading into next year, Gordon knows there's still room for improvement.

"We need to be better," Gordon said. "There are just moments of greatness, that’s there, we just can’t ever pull it all together. That’s where we know we’ve got to get better and that’s what we’re focusing on in the off-season.”
