Gordon Searches For Martinsville Magic

Jeff Gordon has won seven times at Martinsville Speedway but hasn't found victory lane in 36 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, a string he looks to end in Sunday's Tums QuickPak 500.

Gordon has been fast all weekend in Saturday's two practice sessions and believes he has en excellent chance to end the winless streak on Sunday.

“We’ve been anxious to get here for a long time, [and] had, I feel like, the car to beat the last time I was here and came up a little short,” said Gordon, who came home second to Denny Hamlin at Martinsville in March. “It’s a very exciting weekend for us. We built a brand new car."

Gordon knows the clock is ticking on trying to keep alive his streak of winning at last once every Sprint Cup Series season since 1994.

"And we realize that we haven’t won yet this year and five races to go, and we look at here and Atlanta, and Phoenix can be hit or miss for us, Homestead we have been good but not good enough and then Texas has been very challenging," he said.

"So obviously Martinsville is pretty high on our list of priorities and also the excitement level for us coming in here is definitely high. We’re trying not to put too much pressure on ourselves but I do think it’s a track we can do very well at.”

His past experience and knowledge of navigating around the tight .526-mile track gives Gordon a sense of confidence heading into Sunday's race.

"You’ve got to have a lot of patience just to run a single lap by yourself here – you have got to have patience to not overdrive the car – and so you certainly have got to have even more patience when it comes to traffic,” Gordon said. “But when the car is right and I get into that zone, it’s amazing how you can block out how much traffic there really is."
