Summer Breeze

Share:
Nothing like a few days with the family for some fun and relaxation.

Although I tried to stay as far away from the racing world as possible during this year's summer respite, as usual there were several happenings over the mid-year break.

Let's clean out the old reporter's notebook before we charge into the second half of the season and head to Indianapolis for this weekend's jam-packed NASCAR weekend at ORP and The Brickyard:

• Of course the talk of the racing world was the Danica Patrick-Milka Duno dust-up at Mid-Ohio. Every sports report in the country showed footage of the racing cat fight with the video topping the most downloadable list at several websites. Patrick has a reputation for being feisty and combative, maybe overly so, but I have to believe no one will argue her displeasure with Duno, who continues to be a rolling roadblock. Patrick deserves kudos for not going ballistic after getting the towel-in-the-face routine not once but twice from Duno.

• Caught some of Saturday night's Nationwide Series race from Gateway in what looked like a real snooze fest, with the race red-flagged for power outages and a crash before Carl Edwards obliterated the field. Sounds like the Nationwide COT won't be ready to go until 2010.

• Several Sprint Cup regulars were busy around the country in the final off-weekend of the season including Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch running ASA Midwest Tour events in Iowa and Kevin Harvick trying to run the rain-plagued Oxford 250 in Maine. The Macon Speedway will host its annual NASCAR "Night of Stars" on the little quarter-mile dirt track this week with a large contingent of Cup stars slated to be in downstate Illinois.

• Speaking of short tracks, to follow-up on last week's column about the state of the industry, we made it out to Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Saturday night as part of the family vacation and all I can say is bravo. What a beautiful facility that is as clean and friendly as any short track I've visited. Plenty of others could take a lesson from the management at DRP, which also boasts family-friendly admission prices and concessions, which were some of the tastiest anywhere. A fast-paced show with solid car counts as well, but I'm still puzzled at the "Gentlemen's Agreement" rule, whereby a driver who is involved in a spin or accident gets his spot back if another driver takes blame for causing the incident. A blatant spin out of someone is one thing but taking away the "rubbin is racin" quotient of a short track seems to defeat the purpose. But overall the Dells was a blast.

• Finally on the short track scene, Roger Slack, who helped make The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway one of the top notch dirt tracks in the country is leaving, another part of the exodus at LMS in the post-Humpy Wheeler era. There are suddenly some concerns about how the ship in Concord, North Carolina is being run.

• As we get ready to pick things up again in the Sprint Cup world at Indy this weekend, thank God for the Chase. Those who still think the old championship format is the way to go, take a look at the standings. Sorry, but you're dead wrong.

• As always, looking forward to the annual mid-summer journey to Indy for the four-day racing festival between ORP and the speedway. While May is always a special time in Indianapolis, the NASCAR visit has earned its place as one of the special weekends of the year as well.
