RICHMOND, Va. - Take Carl Edwards off the list of potential free agents.

Edwards will stay in the Roush Fenway Racing fold after signing a multiple year deal to remain behind-the-wheel of the organization's No. 99 Ford.

"I looked at everything and I talked to everybody and, for me, the number one thing is looking into the future and saying, 'Where can I win the most races and have the most success?' I just feel like for me, personally, this is where I want to be for the near future," Edwards said.

The deal was hammered out between Edwards and team president Geoff Smith.

"It took us about a week and a half of going back and forth with just little things and I feel like the luckiest guy in the world for the contract I got," Edwards said. "If I was dealing with someone that I didn't trust or that I felt like I couldn't just kind of air everything out with, then I'd probably have to have an agent, but dealing with Geoff from day one has been very easy at Roush for me, so it was really pretty simple. Besides, I feel like I know what I need more than anyone else. I know what I want to make me happy and this is cool."

The team is currently continuing negotiations with Office Depot regarding remaining as sponsor of the No. 99 entry.

RCR STILL LOOKING
Richard Childress Racing will field a fourth team in 2009, but team owner Richard Childress isn't any closer to landing a driver for that ride.

"We hope to have something to announce in the next three or four months," Childress said.

General Mills will leave Petty Enterprises to sponsor the new RCR team.

JUNIOR TO INDYCAR?
Texas Motor Speedway is offering Dale Earnhardt, Jr. $100,000 to drive in the upcoming Indy Racing League Bombadier 500.

"It was interesting to learn Dale Jr. and Danica discussed trading cars on his ‘Unrestricted’ show, and we’re pleased Danica’s track of choice for him would be Texas,” said TMS president Eddie Gossage, referring to Earnhardt's XM Satellite Radio program. “This idea came from that conversation last night, and we would love to facilitate having Dale Jr. in an Indy car for the Bombardier Learjet 550k. After all, next to the Indy 500, it’s the biggest IndyCar race of the year. Junior would make it even bigger.”

No word from the Earnhardt camp but smart money says not to count on this ever happening.
