Different View For Hornish Jr

You wouldn't blame Sam Hornish Jr. if he expects to hear "Back Home Again in Indiana" before Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Hornish has spent most Memorial Day weekends of his racing career taking part in that other holiday race at Indianapolis.

But in 2008, Hornish will try to make his mark in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and after last week's solid run in the All-Star Race at LMS, brings confidence into Sunday's 600.

Hornish raced his way into the main event after a second place finish in the Sprint Showdown qualifier.

Once in the all-star race, he drove his Penske Racing Mobil 1 Dodge to a seventh place finish.

"Our team has a lot of momentum following our performance last weekend in the All-Star Race," said Hornish Jr. "After our disappointing race at Darlington, we needed to have a competitive run and a bit of fun before the Coca-Cola 600."

But the fun is over and Hornish and company need to go back to work on Thursday night and race their way into the 600.

Hornish is 36th in the Sprint Cup owner point standings, meaning he has to qualify on time in Thursday night's session or wind-up watching both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 from his couch.

But Hornish feels confident about his chances.

"This weekend we will have to qualify on time," he said. "That always adds extra pressure to the team and it changes our strategy a bit. Qualifying will be our focus.... But, with all of the recent tests we've done at Lowe's Motor Speedway along with the opportunity to run the All-Star Race, we have had extra time to prepare the Mobil 1 Dodge for the race on Sunday."

Hornish is also hoping to run 300 miles on Saturday when he attempts to run the Nationwide Series race at LMS.

So it wil either be a 900 mile racing weekend behind-the-wheel, or potentially 1,400 miles as a spectator.

Hornish hopes he's have the best seat in the house for both races at Charlotte.
