Jayhawks Inspire Bowyer

Clint Bowyer would like nothing more than to follow up his Kansas Jayhawks NCAA championship with a win at Phoenix International Raceway. Bowyer will be competing in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series this weekend.

The Jayhawks' thrilling win over Memphis in the NCAA title game has Bowyer excited about his chances this coming weekend.

"Man, how awesome was that," Bowyer said. "It was unbelievable. I thought my boys had lost, and then out of nowhere, Chalmers made that shot. You know, it was just meant to be. That's all you can say. It was meant to be. They worked so hard all season long, and they deserved it."

Bowyer likes his chances at the flat, one-mile desert oval which he considers one of his favorites on the schedule.

"I'm excited," he said. "Phoenix has always been a good track for me. I won what was the Busch race last year. And I'm really looking forward to getting back there."

The weekend marks a break from the mid-sized tracks that have dominated the first part of the season.

"Mile and a half have been okay for us, but, you know, I really feel like we had a good test there (at Phoenix) earlier, and looking, like I say, really looking forward to going to Phoenix," Bowyer said. " love the racetrack. It's racy, and you can get up on the wheel and make things happen there."

Bowyer looks to also keep his impressive consistency alive this week at PIR.

Bowyer has been running at the end of every race dating back to Phoenix in November 2006, a streak of 44 races. The only other driver running at the end of more consecutive races is Harvick who owns a streak of 51 events without a did not finish.

Taking the streak to PIR is fine with Bowyer, who always looks forward to racing at the track.

"You can get in and route and gouge, it's fast to where you have to keep the fenders on it," he said of what to expect Saturday night. "You have to keep the car freed up. But you can get in and route and gouge a little bit and get up on the wheel and make it happen."
