Gordon Cruising In California

Jeff Gordon ended his day early after leading the afternoon Preseason Thunder test session at California Speedway with a lap of 180.505 mph in his No. 24A Chevrolet. He opted not to run the night session because the team wanted to test in the similar conditions to next month's Auto Club 500.

"Thought it was a good day," said Gordon, who will plans on running both sessions tomorrow. "The weather was amazing. They are a little bit cooler temperatures than we know we are going to have here when we come back, than we would like to have testing because we want to have as true of reference as we can. All in all it was a good day.

Denny Hamlin topped the first session in both of his Toyotas and then came back in the afternoon and posted the fifth and sixth best speed. The results were good enough to send the No. 11 Team home a bit early.

"We were fastest in the morning and right up there in the top two and three all afternoon, so
we're pretty pleased with it," Hamlin said. It's good enough that where we're going to pack up and go home."

The Roush Fenway teammates of Carl Edwards (181.228 mph) and Matt Kenseth (181.036 mph) were the fastest in the night session that ended at midnight (ET).

California testing will conclude on Friday.
