RacingOne continues our countdown to the 50th running of the Daytona 500 with a look at Marvin Panch's 1961 Daytona 500 win. Panch didn't have the latest equipment back in 1961, but it was good enough to win the Daytona 500. Driving a year old Pontiac for the legendary Smokey Yunick, Panch beat Joe Weatherly by 16 seconds to win the running of the 1961 "Great American Race." It was the first Daytona win for Pontiac. The win was one of 17 career NASCAR Cup wins for Panch, which ties him for 39th on the all-time list with Curtis Turner and current Cup drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kurt Busch.
