"The King," Richard Petty put his name in the record books at Daytona International Speedway in 1964. Driving a potent Plymouth with a new Hemi engine, Petty led 184 of the 200 laps to capture his first Daytona 500, en route to 9 victories that season, earning over $114,000 and his first Grand National championship in 1964. Petty outdistanced Jimmy Pardue by 1 lap, 9 seconds for his for the win in the sixth running of "The Great American Race." After the race was over Petty accepted the trophy from Miss Japan, Akiko Kajima.
