Season Review: Clint Bowyer

In most other seasons, Clint Bowyer might have had a chance to win the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup championship title.

But unfortunately for the young Richard Childress Racing driver, his best season to date was in the same season of Hendrick's dominance with Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.

Bowyer, who's only in his second year of full-time Cup racing, did manage to hold onto third-place in the points.

"It was a successful year for us," Bowyer said at the close of the season. "We had a lot of fun and learned a lot and it was definitely a season we can build on."

The Kansas native's year was a true example of how consistency can pay off for a Cup driver. He and his team managed to finish every race of the season.

In the regular season, Bowyer posted 12 top-10 finishes and only five finishes outside the top 20.

This consistency helped him gain a spot in the Chase and the distinction of being the only driver to make the Chase without having won a race in the regular season. Prior to the Chase points being set, Bowyer was even better than three other drivers in the point standings, all of whom had won at least one race in the regular season.

As a result of not winning a regular season race, Bowyer was ranked 12th after the drivers' points were reset following Richmond.

He quickly proved that he belonged among the few by winning the first race of the Chase at New Hampshire.
Bowyer dominated the race, leading 222 of 300 laps en route to his first career victory and first for sponsor Jack Daniel's in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup competition.

With the victory, Bowyer vaulted to fourth in the point standings. He dropped to fifth the following week after Dover. But with a runner-up finish at Kansas, he took the third spot in the standings and stayed there the rest of the season.

"I wish we could have definitely come down to the last weekend in contention to win this championship. We just fell a little short," Bowyer said of his Chase run. "Texas was pretty much the dagger, the last chance and we just fell a little short. But I’m proud of our year. We've been having a good year."

In the 10 races of the Chase, Bowyer captured three of his five 2007 top-five finishes and had a finishing average of 11.2, despite his 39th-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

On the season, Bowyer posted a 13.8 average finish and led a total of 387 laps.

"I think the biggest thing that I'm excited about is our future together. We're all staying intact, pretty much as a team and I think that's going to be important to our success in the future," Bowyer said.

But before the team gets back to business in 2008, Bowyer will take some time to enjoy life away from the race track.

"I've got a lot of things to do around the house that I've been neglecting. I'm going to stay around there, race go karts with the guys and enjoy non job-related stuff. I'll definitely go back home and see my family in Kansas over the holidays. That's always fun. I’m just looking forward to enjoying a normal life without the hectic schedule."
