Hornish Heading To NASCAR

Sam Hornish, Jr. will make the jump to full-time NEXTEL Cup driver in 2008 when he joins Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman in a third car for Penske Racing.

The former Indy Racing League champion and Indy 500 winner will drive a No. 77 Dodge sponsored by Mobil 1 next season, ending speculation whether he'd return to open wheel racing.

Hornish has tried to qualify for several Cup races this season but has yet to race his way into a field.

However reports have team owner Roger Penske contemplating moving the owner's points from Busch's No. 2 Dodge to Hornish's entry, guaranteeing him a spot in the first five races of 2008, including the Daytona 500.

Busch would have the past champion's provisional from his 2004 title to fall back on in order to earn a spot in six races next year should he fail to qualify on time.

Hornish is entered in both the Busch and Cup races at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend.
