Scene Of The Crime

The last time Kurt Busch was in Dover he lost 100 points for a pit road altercation with Tony Stewart, an incident he says was the catalyst for the Miller Lite Dodge team's resurgence.

After a tangle on the track, Busch drove next to Stewart's car while it was parked in its pit stall and made contact with the No. 20 Chevrolet.

The altercation sparked fiery words from both drivers and the wrath of NASCAR, who slammed Busch with the 100 point penalty.

But Busch claims there was good in the bad behavior.

“I look back on that race now and I have to point to it as a major turning point for our season,” said Busch, who rallied through the summer months to qualify for this year's Chase for the NEXTEL Cup. "It definitely was a tough turning point and maybe in the past it would have made the team or me crumble and not make some changes."

"It was a perfect example of, 'We've got to get it in gear and we've got to make this Chase.' It feels like an eternity ago that it did happen because of all the good things that have happened in between."

In an odd way, Busch even felt Stewart played a part in the turnaround.

“As crazy as it may sound, I actually thanked Tony in passing while all of us Chase drivers were gathering on the stage after the Richmond race,” said Busch. “I said something like, ‘Hey man, thanks for helping us jump start our season after the deal at Dover.’"

After starting the Chase with a disappointing 25th place finish at New Hampshire last week with engine problems, Busch will have to bounce back at a track that hasn't been particularly kind.

He is winless in 14 previous Cup starts at the "Monster Mile."

Despite the shutout, Busch has a positive outlook for the return to Dover this weekend.

“Our COT program just gets stronger and stronger,” said Busch. “We had a top-five car there in the spring race before the incident took us out of the running. We’ve made such improvements since then that I’m confident we’ll have a car capable of winning this time around.”
