Harvick All-Star Winner

CONCORD, N.C. - Kevin Harvick sure loves winning the big money races.

After starting the season with a Daytona 500 win, Harvick added another million dollar plus victory Saturday night.

Harvick held off Jimmie Johnson to win the NEXTEL All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway and the $1,031,539 prize.

"To win the Daytona 500 and the All-Star race is pretty cool," Harvick said in victory lane.

It was Harvick's first win in seven all-star race starts. The victory gave car owner Richard Childress his fourth all-star trophy and first in 14 years.

Harvick, who finished second in last year's race, kept his Pennzoil Chevrolet ahead of Johnson in the closing laps of the final 20-lap segment.

"Jimmie and I race hard," Harvick said. "He taught me a little something there getting into Turn 3. I was way over-driving it."

Johnson, last year's race winner, settled for second ahead of Mark Martin, who piloted the Ginn Racing U.S. Army Chevy home to an impressive third-place finish after starting 18th at the begining of the night.

"We started in the back and we had a great run," Martin said. "We kept getting better. The format, 20 lappers are pretty short for me, there not my specialty."

Harvick's RCR teammate Jeff Burton was fourth with Tony Stewart rounding out the top five.

Johnny Sauter, who raced his way into the main event from the NEXTEL Open, finished sixth followed by Matt Kenseth, who was forced to settle for a seventh-place finish after winning the first and third segment.

But Kenseth was caught speeding on his exit from pit road and penalized by NASCAR, forced to start the final segment from the rear of the field.

"It wasn't necessarily a tough break, it was a dumb mistake by me," Kenseth said. "It was real important to be up front tonight. When we were in front, we were one of the best cars."

Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Open winner Martin Truex Jr. completed the first ten finishers.

The four segment event was uneventful for the most part, but there were some fireworks during the final segment when brothers Kyle and Kurt Busch made contact while racing for position.

Kyle tried to drive low around Kurt as they raced into the first turn, but wound up sliding into his brother with the two cars making heavy impact into the wall.

"I was waiting for the day we got together," Kurt said. "We did and we were racing for $1 million bucks. It was a bummer to have my little brother pull that move on me. Maybe I should have given an inch instead of taking an inch.

"We’ll see what he has to say about it, but right now I am not eating any Kellogg’s any time soon," he said, referring to Kyle's sponsor.

After transferring in on the fan vote, Kenny Wallace was the last of 21 cars running in 16th place.

The NEXTEL Cup Series returns to Lowe's Motor Speedway next Sunday night for the Coca-Cola 600.
