Stremme Scores First Top 10

David Stremme doesn't want to believe in the term "sophomore slump."

Through seven races in the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season, Stremme is off to a stellar start, capturing six top-20 finishes - including his first career top 10 over the weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.

"That was a great top 10 finish, and it's a career best, but I thought we were headed for a better finish today," Stremme said. "Still, a top 10 at Texas is pretty good."

The driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge currently sits 12th in the standings and is the top performer so far at Chip Ganassi Racing right in front of his rookie teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

So how much difference does a year make?

Well at this point last year heading into Phoenix, Stremme was 37th in the points and had an average finish of 31.7 compared to 17.3 in the races contested so far in 2007. In fact, he's only three top-20 finishes away of equaling his 2006 mark.

"We've done what we set out to do in these first few races," Stremme said. "We wanted to get top 15 finishes and do the best we could in the points. We just need to keep doing what we're doing and we'll be OK."

This weekend, Stremme will head to Phoenix International Raceway for the series' third Car of Tomorrow race. After finishing 10th in the first COT race at Bristol, Stremme and the team struggled at Martinsville where they posted their only finish outside of the top 20 in 2007 – 35th.

In what he called a "horrible day" back at Martinsville, Stremme hopes he can carry his Texas momentum into Phoenix.

Now that he's got his first Cup top 10, it's time to shoot for one with the COT.
