A Slow Go

If there's an agreement between Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and DEI, everyone knows about it except the two parties involved.

An online report earlier this week indicated Junior had been given the 51 percent ownership stake in DEI he and sister/business manager Kelly Elledge has requested.

Not so says Earnhardt, Jr.

"If that was the case, I'd know about it," he said.

"Things are (the same) as they were yesterday, the day before, the last couple of weeks. We're just moving along with the negotiations."

In fact, according to Elledge, negotiations aren't any further along than they were nearly three months ago when the process started. She said there is no indication DEI owner Teresa Earnhardt or president of global operations Max Siegel are willing to give up a majority stake in the company.

"All conversations have been between Max and myself in the past few weeks discussing various ideas and alternatives understanding that Teresa is not willing to give up 51% of DEI for nothing," Elledge said.

So it appears the hardball continues and one has to wonder just how long this game of chicken will continue.

Earnhardt and Elledge said they wanted this situation cleared up in a window of 30-45 days, which would have an expiration date around the middle of May.

That's less than a month away and both sides seem as far apart as ever.

"We still have a lot we need to work out," Earnhardt, Jr. said in Phoenix as he looks for his third PIR win Saturday night in the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500. "We were honest where we were from the beginning and I feel like it's hard to keep anything (secret) these days."

It's no secret that DEI needs Dale Earnhardt, Jr. more than the other way around.

My guess is there will be an agreement between the two parties, but the glacier-like movement in negotiations is certainly cause to keep a close eye on the situation.
