Test Heads West

The clock continues to count down to the start of the 2007 season and teams will have one last test this week.

NASCAR Preseason Thunder testing heads west to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as 55 NEXTEL Cup teams invade the newly-reconfigured track for the last off season test of the year.

LVMS' new twenty degree banking will get its first real test this week during the three day session.

"It's a totally different race track than what it was before," said Kyle Busch, who got a taste of the new track during a Goodyear tire test back in Decmeber. "It’s fast and it’s challenging. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to race on. It will be interesting to see how the test session goes."

Besides being the last open test before the start of the season, this week's session in Las Vegas carries more importance.

"The Las Vegas test is significant in that it is one of only two tests at a 1.5-mile track (Lowe’s Motor Speedway in May being the other)," said NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton. "This test provides the teams with a lot of valuable information they can put to use in getting prepared for most of the races that they won’t be running the Car of Tomorrow."

It will be a hectic three days at Las Vegas with the number of teams expected to be on hand, but Busch is looking forward to getting in a little work as well as some place in his hometown.

"My favorite thing about going to Las Vegas is just that it’s home to me," Busch said. "I really take the time to relax when I’m there. I go see some old friends and just enjoy the time there.

"It seems like when we’re there for race weekend everything’s pretty rushed, but testing’s a little different,. So, hopefully next week we’ll learn a lot on the track and I’ll get some downtime in my hometown."

RacingOne will have complete coverage of the Las Vegas test including speeds and other inside news and information.
