For the first time this week, drivers were able to get a taste of the draft in the afternoon session with Newman (186.540 mph) and David Ragan (186.536 mph) leading the way.
"I think we are more ahead this time then where we were last year," Newman said. "This is the same car that we finished third with in the Daytona 500 last year."
Kurt Busch, who blew an engine close to the end of the session, was third in his No. 2B Dodge at 186.501 mph.
Jeff Gordon (186.463 mph) and Matt Kenseth (186.455 mph) rounded out the top five.
All the drivers in the garage area were racing today with heavy hearts with today's passing of 1973 Cup Series champion Benny Parsons.
"He's was a great champion and a great TV announcer," Kenseth said. "And the best about Benny is he was always happy."
Montoya completed 11 laps in the morning single-lap session with his fast lap of 184.574 mph coming on lap two. His teammate David Stremme was second with a speed of 184.479 mph in the No. 40 Dodge.
David Gilliland, Gordon and Kenseth completed the top five in the a.m. test.
Before he lost the engine, Busch completed the most laps in one session on Tuesday with 62 in the afternoon.
Testing will continue tomorrow.
