Shop Tour: Hendrick Motorsports
December 13, 2006 | 11:49 A.M. EST
The gigantic Hendrick Motorsports complex is located in Charlotte, N.C. right down the street from Lowe's Motor Speedway. The 70 plus acre facility is the home of more than ten buildings that make up the NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series races teams.
Sitting on top of a hill overlooking a pond is where you will find the Cup race shops.
The race shop for the 2006 NEXTEL Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and four-time champ Jeff Gordon will be the first on the right. When visitors enter the elegant building, they are greeted by the No. 24 Dupont Chevrolet of Gordon and the No. 48 of Johnson. The lobby area also holds numerous uniforms and a large wall of trophies. After that fans can enter another room where they will find an impressive display of more cars from Gordon and Johnson's racing career all surrounded by a catchfence and Musco lightning. Off in the distance visitors can see the teams working on cars for upcoming races.
Next door to the No. 48 and 24 building sits the newest race shop, which opened its doors in 2005. This huge building houses the No. 5 of Kyle Busch and the No. 25 of Casey Mears. Just like the previous shop, show cars, trophies and uniforms are on display in the main lobby. The main area also has the 1984 All-Star Racing Chevrolet of Geoff Bodine on display.
The race shop can also get emotional, as a large picture at the end of the hallway remembers Papa Joe Hendrick and the four Hendrick family members that lost their lives in a tragic plane crash in 2004. Ricky Hendrick was one of the 10 that was on the plane, and the race shop is dedicated to him by displaying some of his race cars, that include his Quaker State Late Model and No. 17 GMAC NASCAR Craftsman Truck.
After looking at all the cars, photos and trophies, visitors can walk over and look at the shop area for the No. 5 and 25 through large glass windows.
The final race shop, which houses the No. 5 Busch car, is located at the bottom of the hill next to the team museum and gift shop. Once there, visitors can look directly into the shop through an unglassed window.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Sometimes hours are extended during Cup race weekends at LMS so be sure to call ahead.
Be sure to check back next week as we conclude our race shop tours with a look at the Hendrick Motorsports Museum and shop.
