Season Review: Matt Kenseth

Matt Kenseth wound up playing bridesmaid to Jimmie Johnson in 2006.

But Kenseth turned in another one of his patented consistent seasons which included four trips to victory lane.

"Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 team did a great job in the second half of the 'Chase', and they deserve the championship," said Kenseth. "They simply outperformed us."

During the regular season, Kenseth stayed near the top of the NEXTEL Cup standings. A late summer hot streak, that included back-to-back wins at Michigan and Bristol, gave him the top spot in the standings entering the "Chase."

But too many mediocre finishes during the championship portion of the year found Kenseth playing catch-up to Johnson and in the end, the 2003 champ was 56 points behind in the title quest.

"I'm proud of our team this year," he said. "Even when things weren't really going our way at the end of the year, and our cars were off a little bit, they didn't quit or hang their heads. They kept fighting to make the car better and did an awesome job on pit road to keep and gain track position. Robbie Reiser, as usual, had this team operating at a championship level all season long."

As Kenseth looked back on the year, he smiled about the success he had on the track and the fun he had during the marathon season.

"I had as much fun this year as I ever have driving a Cup car," said Kenseth. "We won four races and came close to winning about four or five more."
