Harvick Paces The Chase

If momentum means anything, the rest of the "Chase for the NEXTEL Cup" field should fear Kevin Harvick.

Harvick followed up his win at Richmond last Saturday night by winning the pole Friday afternoon for the NEXTEL Cup Series Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway

Harvick's No. 29 Reese's Chevrolet turned in a lap of 132.282 mph to notch his first NEXTEL Cup Series pole of the season.

Harvick's last Cup pole came at Richmond in September of 2005. Friday's run was his fifth career Bud Pole.

Jeff Gordon paced Friday's first practice session and backed it up with a qualifying run good enough for the second starting spot.

Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five.

David Stremme, Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Robby Gordon and Ken Schrader completed the first ten qualifiers.

The rest of the "Chase" drivers qualified as follows: Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start 13th, Kyle Busch 16th, Jeff Burton 22nd, Matt Kenseth 25th, Mark Martin 26th and Kasey Kahne 33rd.

Five drivers failed to qualify for Sunday's race: Stanton Barrett, Derrike Cope, Kenny Wallace, Carl Long and Chad Blount.

Sunday's Sylvania 300 will take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
