Gordons Drive For Five

Michael Schumacher did it in earlier this month. And Jeff Gordon hopes to match the feat next weekend.

Gordon looks to become a five-time Allstate 400 at the Brickyard winner in next Sunday's edition of the classic at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If he's able to make it to victory lane, he'll join Schumacher, who has won the Formula One United State Grand Prix five times, in the elite club.

"Any time you win there, whether it's your first time or your fourth or fifth time, it's incredible," Gordon said.

But Gordon isn't sold on comparing Indianapolis victories between the different types of competition the track now holds, a far cry from its IndyCar-only days prior to 1994 when NASCAR made its first trip to the famed speedway.

"I know a lot of people are throwing out the Michael Schumacher being the only five time winner there," Gordon said. "I don't think any of us compare the Indy 500 winners anyway, so I try really not to compare too much with (Formula One) stats. I know I've got four there, and they've been some of the most amazing moments of my career, and I'd love to get another one."

Gordon won the inaugural Brickyard back in 1994 and followed up with wins in 1998, 2001 and 2004.

"It's really hard for me to imagine that we've won there four times," he said. "It's one of the races that I look forward to the most every season. It's one of those races that our team wants to win as much or more than any other, and yet we've been able to do it four times."

Doing it again this year would mean a great deal to Gordon's chances to win a fifth NEXTEL Cup Series championship. He comes into Sunday's race ninth in the series point standings and on a recent hot streak, which has included wins in Sonoma and Chicagoland over the summer stretch of the schedule.

"I still don't think we've reached our full potential," he said. " felt like we were going to hit on things during the summer, and we have."
