"Maybe Someday"

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - While Ricky Carmichael was walking the Daytona International Speedway trioval Friday morning, studying the layout for the evening’s Daytona Supercross By Honda, he might have taken a peek or two at the high- banked turns in the distance.

Carmichael went on to win AMA Supercross racing’s crown jewel for a record fifth time. Now, he’s thinking of a loftier goal. The 14-time AMA champion admits he wants to try his hand at stock car racing – but he has no timetable for a switch from two to four wheels.

“I tested a stock car last summer, and it was fun,” Carmichael said. “I had a great time. It’s definitely something that interests me, for sure. At the same time, I’m head deep in this kind of stuff.”

“This kind of stuff” is AMA Supercross. Carmichael is currently seeking his fifth Supercross title in six years (he was injured in 2004), along with his sixth AMA 250 Motocross title. Friday night was his 46th career Supercross victory, with an AMA-leading 133 triumphs in the combined Supercross and Motocross divisions. His victory gave him the points lead over Chad Reed after winning six of 10 2006 events. Charmichael also captured his fifth Daytona Supercross By Honda, breaking a tie with Jeff Stanton as the all-time leading winner of the event.

Last summer, Carmichael tested a ray Evernham car at Hickory Speedway for Kasey Kahne, whom he met at the 2004 Daytona 500.

“I’d absolutely like to try it,” Carmichael said. “I’ve got a great opportunity, and I would love to try it out sometime.”

However, he would give no timetable for his next step.

“It’s a while,” he said. “Supercross is my love and this is my passion, and I want to get on with this.”

After his victory, Carmichael was asked if he would like to someday race another type of vehicle at Daytona.

“Definitely,” he said. “It would be fun. That’s definitely a goal of mine, and I’ve got some great opportunities. You always like to think about that, but it’s a lot easier said than done. Maybe someday. I’m looking forward to it. But on a big track like this, it’s a ways away. But yes.”

Did he and Kasey Kahne shake hands on a deal?

“A little more,” Carmichael answered with a smile. “A little more.”
